Double-acting actuators require air pressure to extend and retract the piston

2025-04-03

Double-acting actuators are integral components in a wide range of industrial applications. As their name implies, these actuators rely on air pressure for both the extension and retraction of the piston.

The double-acting actuator features two ports for air intake. When compressed air is introduced through one of the ports, the high-pressure air exerts a strong force on the surface of the piston. This force propels the piston in a specific direction, enabling precise operation of mechanical devices. To retract the piston, the airflow is redirected to the other intake port. Concurrently, the air on the initial side is expelled through the corresponding exhaust port.

Take the pneumatic valve control system as an example. Double-acting actuators, following the aforementioned mechanism, can rapidly and accurately open or close valves in response to commands from the control system. Compared to single-acting actuators, which use air pressure for piston extension and springs for retraction, double-acting actuators offer faster response times and greater thrust. They can achieve rapid reciprocating motion of the piston, enhancing system efficiency. Therefore, they are highly suitable for industrial scenarios with strict requirements for response speed and control accuracy, such as automated production lines in the petrochemical and power sectors.
